What Occupational Health Can and Cannot Recommend

Occupational Health can advise on fitness for work, functional restrictions, return options, adjustments and review timing. OH does not issue warnings, decide grievances, determine legal claims or dismiss employees. Management decides workplace action and remains responsible for legal duties.

What Occupational Health can cover

  • Fitness for current duties or a return to work.
  • Temporary or longer-term functional restrictions.
  • A phased return, altered hours, amended duties or workplace adaptations.
  • Adjustments to meetings, communication, workload or location.
  • Whether further medical evidence or a review may be useful.

What Occupational Health cannot decide

OH cannot decide whether misconduct occurred, whether performance allegations are proved, whether a manager acted fairly or whether dismissal is justified. It can provide medical information relevant to those decisions.

Members can unlock: a recommendation-strength framework, guidance for vague or conflicting reports, follow-up questions, alternative-adjustment planning and wording for asking management to explain how each OH recommendation was considered.
