Informal Resolution Before a Grievance

Informal resolution can solve a Civil Service workplace problem before positions harden. It works best when the issue is clear, the person approached has authority to act and you create a reliable written record of what was agreed. It is not suitable for every complaint.

When an informal approach may help

An informal conversation, written clarification, facilitated discussion or mediation can be useful for misunderstandings, working-style conflicts, unclear expectations, isolated comments and problems that a manager can correct quickly.

When you may need to go formal immediately

A serious safety concern, sexual harassment, threats, repeated retaliation, a major conflict of interest or an urgent decision may make an informal route unsafe or pointless. Check the relevant policy and seek representation where needed.

Unlock the informal-resolution plan below, including preparation, scripts, written follow-up, boundaries and the point at which you should stop repeating informal steps and move to a formal grievance.
