Grievance Outcomes and Recommendations

A grievance outcome should do more than state whether a complaint is upheld. It should show what was considered, explain the findings and identify any action or recommendations. You need to test both the reasoning and whether the proposed remedy will actually resolve the problem.

Possible grievance findings

An outcome may uphold, partly uphold or reject individual grievance points. It may also find insufficient evidence, identify a process failure without accepting motive, or recommend action even where a formal allegation is not upheld.

Why information may be limited

The department should explain your outcome, but it may not disclose confidential disciplinary or employment action concerning another employee. Focus on the finding, workplace remedy and how future risk will be controlled.
