Behaviour, experience, technical and strength examples for EO, HEO, SEO and Grade 7
Project delivery interviews can test behaviours, strengths, experience and technical knowledge. Strong answers explain how you think, give specific evidence and show that your decisions match the level of the role.
The questions below are realistic examples rather than a fixed interview bank. The vacancy tells you which Success Profile elements and technical areas will be assessed.

What to expect
- Behaviour questions asking for a specific past example.
- Experience questions about the project work you have completed.
- Technical questions covering planning, risks, governance, budgets, assurance, benefits or change.
- Strength questions about activities you do regularly, do well and find motivating.
- Follow-up questions testing your judgement, personal contribution and understanding of the result.
For behaviour questions, the civilservicecareers.org/ approach is B-STAR: begin with a brief belief or approach, then move into Situation, Task, Action and Result. Keep the opening relevant and short. Strength answers should sound natural and remain proportionate.
Common interview mistakes
- Giving a project overview instead of answering the question.
- Using “we” for every action and leaving personal responsibility unclear.
- Describing the control without explaining the decision it supported.
- Claiming a successful launch while ignoring defects, cost or remaining risk.
- Giving a memorised speech that does not respond to the wording used by the panel.
- Treating technical questions as requests for definitions only.
