A strong Business Analyst personal statement explains how you analyse problems, work with business and user needs and help teams make better decisions about change. The evidence should make your analytical judgement visible rather than simply listing BA tools or ceremonies.

What Business Analyst recruiters usually want to see

• Evidence that you understood the problem before defining requirements or recommending a solution.
• Clear use of analysis techniques chosen for a reason, rather than a list of methods.
• Business and user needs that are challenged, prioritised and kept traceable.
• Stakeholder work that shows disagreement, negotiation or clarification rather than passive consultation.
• A clear link between analysis outputs and a delivery, service or decision outcome.
• For senior roles, leadership of analysis across other analysts, teams or complex problem spaces.

How to structure the statement

There is no mandatory personal statement structure. A practical approach is to use short sections that follow the most important essential criteria in the advert. Give enough context to understand the work, then spend most of the space on what you personally analysed, challenged, produced or influenced.

If a vacancy asks for a separate technical statement, keep that answer focused on the named skill. Do not assume the same evidence will automatically be considered elsewhere unless the application instructions say so.

How the evidence changes by grade

• EO: defined tasks, accurate analysis outputs, good questioning, requirements support and sensible escalation.
• HEO: independent ownership of a problem area, facilitation, process or needs analysis, options and requirements management.
• SEO: analysis leadership across complex work, cross-team needs, mentoring, strategic context and influence over delivery priorities.
• Grade 7: direction of business analysis across programmes or several products, leadership through analysts, senior influence and alignment to organisational strategy.

Common personal statement mistakes

• Opening with a long career summary before addressing the criteria.
• Saying you used workshops, BPMN, Jira or user stories without explaining what problem they helped solve.
• Treating every stakeholder request as a valid requirement.
• Focusing on documentation while leaving analysis and judgement unclear.
• Giving a detailed solution description without showing the user or business need.
• For senior roles, describing personal delivery tasks while leaving leadership of other analysts or strategic influence absent.
