Business Analyst CV and Previous Skills Examples

Employment History and concise Relevant Skills and Experience examples from EO to Grade 7

Civil Service applications often separate Employment History from Previous Skills and Experience. Employment History is normally a factual timeline. Previous Skills and Experience is where you map concise evidence against the vacancy requirements.

The CV section should set up the evidence. Fuller examples belong in the personal statement and behaviour sections.

Read the vacancy instructions first

Recruitment campaigns use CV fields differently. Some ask for a career history, some score achievements and experience, and others specify a word limit or named criteria. Follow the exact instructions in the advert and application form before using any general format.

Employment History

Unless the vacancy asks for more, keep Employment History as a factual timeline using employer, job title and dates.

~ Department for Digital Services | Business Analyst | April 2024 to present

~ Regional Support Agency | Service Improvement Officer | January 2022 to March 2024

~ Northborough Council | Casework Officer | August 2019 to December 2021

Relevant Skills and Experience

Use one concise evidence slot for each important advert requirement. Use the requirement as a label where useful and follow it with specific evidence showing where you used the skill and what you contributed.

Do not write a complete STAR answer under every heading. This section should be easy to scan and should leave fuller stories for the personal statement or behaviour statement.

Short HEO example

~ Defining and managing business needs: Led requirements work for an appointment-booking service, challenged requested features against the agreed problem statement and converted validated business and user needs into prioritised stories, acceptance criteria and non-functional requirements.

This gives the sifter a clear evidence match without repeating a full application example.

Common mistakes

~ Writing a generic career summary that does not follow the advert.

~ Turning each criterion into a full STAR answer.

~ Listing BA tools without showing the work they supported.

~ Using the same detailed example again in the personal statement.

~ Missing a technical skill or essential criterion because several requirements were combined too broadly.

~ Inflating seniority by changing job titles or claiming decisions that belonged to another role.
