Civil Service Business Analyst interviews can assess Success Profiles behaviours, experience and technical skills from the Government Digital and Data capability framework. Some vacancies also use a presentation or a separate technical exercise.

Strong answers explain how you understood the problem, why you chose your analysis approach and what changed because of your work. Technical terminology should support the answer rather than replace it.

What to expect

A vacancy may ask behaviour questions, experience questions or technical questions aligned to skills such as Context, Problem and Option Analysis, Defining and Managing Business Needs, Business Process Improvement or Stakeholder Relationship Management. The advert should tell you what is being assessed.

Technical questions may ask for a specific example or ask how you would approach a situation. If it asks for an example, give enough context to make your decisions understandable. If it asks how you would approach something, explain the sequence and judgement rather than forcing the answer into STAR.

Common interview mistakes

• Reciting a BA methodology instead of answering the actual question.
• Saying you gathered requirements without explaining how you challenged or prioritised them.
• Describing a solution before showing the business or user problem.
• Using process maps, user stories or workshops as the outcome rather than the means.
• Giving technical detail that the panel cannot connect to the decision or service outcome.
• For senior roles, answering as the sole analyst and leaving leadership of other analysts or cross-team influence unclear.
