HR Adviser and HR Business Partner Interview Questions and Answers

Realistic Civil Service HR interview questions with model answers from EO to Grade 7

Civil Service HR interviews can assess behaviours, strengths, experience and technical or professional judgement. The strongest answers stay grounded in the actual role, explain the applicant's reasoning and show a sensible boundary between HR advice and the decisions owned by managers or senior leaders.

What to expect

The interview format varies by campaign. An HR casework role might test policy judgement and sensitive conversations, while an HR Business Partner interview may focus more heavily on workforce insight, senior influence, change and business understanding.

Behaviour questions usually need a specific example. Experience and technical questions may ask what you have done or how you would approach a realistic HR problem. Strength questions are normally shorter and are designed to explore what you do well and find energising.

Where a question presents a scenario, avoid inventing facts. Explain what you would establish first, which risks or policies matter and when you would seek specialist input.

Common interview mistakes

  • Answering as though HR owns every people decision.
  • Quoting policy instead of explaining the judgement you applied.
  • Giving a highly sensitive case example with unnecessary personal detail.
  • Using one employee relations case for every question, even when the role is focused on wider workforce strategy.
  • For senior roles, discussing workforce data without explaining how it changed the business decision.
  • Turning strength questions into long rehearsed STAR answers.
