What recruiters usually want to see

Customer Service Adviser adverts often ask for clear communication, customer focus and accurate use of systems or guidance. Many also look for resilience, teamwork or the ability to manage a busy workload. The wording changes from vacancy to vacancy, so build the statement around the actual essential criteria.

At AO, the strongest evidence is practical. Show the customer problem, the checks you made and the action you took. Finish with a useful result such as a resolved query, a corrected record or a customer who understood the next step.

How to structure the statement

Use the advert as the writing plan. Where the form allows headings, the criterion wording can make each section easy to find. Start with a short context sentence and move quickly into the evidence.

Keep the action personal. Explain how you listened, checked information or followed the relevant process. Your result should show what changed for the customer or the service.

Common personal statement mistakes

  • Opening with a long career history and leaving little room for evidence.
  • Using phrases such as good customer service without describing a real interaction.
  • Describing a customer complaint without showing how the facts were checked.
  • Giving the result as customer satisfaction alone when accuracy was also important.
  • Repeating the same example under several criteria with only minor wording changes.
  • Writing at team leader level when the vacancy asks for hands-on AO service delivery.
