HMRC Compliance Interview Questions and Answers

EO and HEO interview preparation for HMRC Compliance Caseworker roles

HMRC Compliance interviews can test behaviours, strengths and role-relevant judgement. Strong answers sound evidence led and fair. They also show that you can question information professionally without deciding the outcome before the facts are known.

The exact format changes between recruitment campaigns. HMRC currently states that Compliance Caseworker interviews are usually completed online and that the live advert gives the assessment details.

How to prepare

Prepare examples around investigation, decision making and customer communication. Include at least one example where the first explanation proved incomplete and you had to gather more information before acting.

For behaviour questions, use B-STAR as a preparation structure. Give a short belief or approach, then move quickly into the situation and your responsibility. Spend most of the answer on your actions and reasoning before finishing with the result.

Strength answers should stay shorter. Explain your natural approach, why it suits you and give a brief example when it helps prove the point.

What strong answers usually show

  • Curiosity supported by evidence.
  • Impartial decisions and clear records.
  • Confidence asking difficult questions professionally.
  • Awareness of customer circumstances and communication needs.
  • Comfort learning detailed guidance and checking uncertainty.
  • Ownership of deadlines and case progress.

Common interview mistakes

  • Saying you would assume dishonesty when information does not match.
  • Giving a long tax explanation instead of answering the question asked.
  • Using a team example where your own decision remains unclear.
  • Claiming you never make mistakes or never need technical advice.
  • Turning a strength answer into a full five-minute behaviour story.
  • Answering a scenario with enforcement first and evidence gathering second.
