Unfair Treatment, Favouritism and Inconsistent Standards

Unfair treatment is easier to challenge when you can show the decision, the standard applied to you and how a genuinely similar situation was handled differently. A general sense of favouritism may be real, but the evidence needs to identify what changed and why it matters.

Use the manager problems hub to find connected guidance.

What inconsistent treatment can include

  • Different deadlines or flexibility for similar work.
  • Your mistakes being recorded while comparable mistakes are handled informally.
  • Opportunities, information or visibility repeatedly going to the same people.
  • Different attendance, office or communication expectations.
  • Your explanations being rejected where similar explanations are accepted for others.
  • Rules changing depending on who is involved.
  • Criticism for conduct that is tolerated or encouraged elsewhere in the team.

Use comparators carefully

A comparator is useful only where the circumstances are genuinely similar. Consider role, grade, workload, experience, deadlines, previous concerns, type of mistake and the manager making the decision. Differences may explain different treatment. Record them rather than ignoring them.

Ask for the standard, reason and evidence

Before alleging favouritism, ask what standard was applied and why the decision was made. The answer may resolve the issue, expose inconsistency or create a useful written record.
