An unreasonable workload is difficult to prove through a statement that you are overwhelmed. Show the tasks, time available, priority conflicts, dependencies and warnings you gave. Ask management to make the trade-off rather than silently accepting work that cannot all be delivered.

Signs the workload needs to be challenged
- New work is added without existing work being removed.
- Deadlines assume dependencies will arrive immediately.
- Repeated urgent requests prevent planned work.
- The volume requires regular unpaid or excessive hours.
- Quality expectations cannot be met within the time.
- Health is being affected.
- You have warned about the risk and no decision has been made.
- The resulting delays are being recorded as your performance failure.
Turn workload into a decision
List the work in priority order with realistic effort, deadlines and dependencies. Identify what will miss if the new request is accepted. Ask the manager to choose. This is stronger than agreeing to everything and explaining afterwards that it was impossible.
Workload trade-off
“I can complete the urgent briefing by Wednesday, but this will move the case review to Monday. Both cannot be completed to the required standard by Friday with the current information. Please confirm which outcome you want prioritised.”
Keep warning records
Save the workload updates, risk logs and requests for support. Record the response. A manager may later say the pressure was never raised, the deadline was agreed or help was offered. Your contemporaneous record should show what management knew and when.
