When a manager problem cannot be resolved directly, you may need to approach a senior manager, use a policy route or move away from the team. The best option depends on the seriousness of the issue, the evidence, whether the relationship can be repaired and how close the situation is to formal action.

When to escalate above your manager
- Your manager is the subject of the concern.
- Direct attempts have failed or made the position worse.
- The issue affects a formal record, health, adjustment or ability to work.
- You need a decision outside your manager’s authority.
- The relationship has broken down.
- There is a risk of retaliation, discipline, performance action or dismissal.
- An urgent meeting or deadline requires independent oversight.
What a senior manager needs from you
Give a short chronology, the strongest examples, evidence, steps already taken and the outcome you want. The senior manager needs to know what decision or intervention is required. A large document dump without a clear ask can delay action.
When moving teams may be safer
A move may protect your income, record and health where trust has broken down or formal action appears likely. Before anything formal starts, internal options may include a managed move, temporary assignment, loan, secondment, expression of interest, lateral move or vacancy under another manager.
