Make your judgement visible in scenario questions
Scenario questions give you a hypothetical problem and ask what you would do. The panel is testing your priorities, use of evidence, treatment of people, risk awareness and ability to choose a practical course of action.

A scenario may be spoken, written or included in an assessment centre exercise. It can test a behaviour, experience area, technical skill or several requirements together. Your answer should follow a clear route and stay proportionate to the level of the role.

What the panel wants to hear

The panel is not looking for a perfect prediction. It wants to understand how you think. Strong answers identify the objective, immediate risks, information gaps, people affected, options, decision authority and follow-up. Weak answers jump to action without checking the facts or produce a long list without making a decision.

Use a simple scenario route

  1. Clarify the outcome required and any urgent risk.
  2. Gather the minimum information needed to act safely.
  3. Identify who is affected and who has decision authority.
  4. Compare realistic options, including risks and constraints.
  5. Choose an action and explain the communication route.
  6. Monitor the result and adjust where evidence changes.

Keep the answer at the right grade

At junior grades, a strong answer may focus on following guidance, checking information, serving the customer and escalating at the right point. At middle grades, the panel may expect planning, prioritisation, stakeholder management and ownership of delivery. At senior grades, the scenario may require strategic trade-offs, cross-organisational influence, governance and accountability for wider impact.

Where the scenario is unclear, state the assumptions you are making and ask focused questions. This shows control without avoiding the decision. Keep the answer tied to the information the panel has provided.
