How to show it and digital skills in an AO personal statement

AO digital evidence should show confident and accurate use of systems or tools to complete real work. Name the tool only where useful, then focus on what you did with it, the checks you applied and the service or efficiency outcome.

What it and digital skills criteria can look like

1
“Confident user of common IT systems and Microsoft Office applications”
2
“Ability to learn and use digital systems accurately”
3
“Uses digital tools to organise information and improve efficiency”

What your it and digital skills example needs to show

Evidence the sifter needs for it and digital skills
The system, spreadsheet, document tool or digital process used.
The work outcome the tool supported, rather than a list of software names.
Specific functions, checks or steps you used.
How you learned an unfamiliar feature or resolved a digital problem.
The resulting accuracy, time saving, accessibility or service improvement.

Why a strong it and digital skills answer works

A strong answer gives the sifter evidence instead of claims. A weak answer might say, “I am highly computer literate and have excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office and many other systems.” A strong answer shows the task, the applicant’s own actions and the outcome. The best answers also show judgement, such as using the simplest suitable tool, checking data and permissions and knowing when a workaround would create security or accuracy risk. For an AO role, the example should remain practical and believable.

Weak evidence
I am highly computer literate and have excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office and many other systems.
Stronger evidence
I used Outlook templates, Excel validation, formulas and filters, and targeted Teams checks to produce a complete equipment action list by the deadline.
