Make Leadership visible through specific AO-level actions
Leadership is about taking responsibility for your own contribution and behaving in a way that supports the purpose and standards of the team. This guide translates the official AA/AO points into practical evidence and shows how to build a complete statement without inflating the level of responsibility.

Use the AO Behaviour Statements hub for the complete set of behaviour guides. The matching AO Leadership Interview Questions page shows how the same criteria can be tested through spoken questions and follow-ups.

What is Leadership?

Leadership is about taking responsibility for your own contribution and behaving in a way that supports the purpose and standards of the team. For an AO role, this usually means showing enthusiasm, fairness and accountability without pretending that you formally manage people.

At AO level, the behaviour is often demonstrated through practical situations such as owning a difficult task, setting a positive example, treating people fairly, supporting a team objective or considering how your choices affect others. A strong answer shows personal responsibility and positive conduct in service of the wider team, rather than relying on a management job title.

What are the criteria at AO level?

The official AA and AO behaviour guide lists 6 points for Leadership. Quote them exactly in your planning notes and make each point visible through evidence.

1
“show enthusiasm for your work and take personal accountability for your role”
2
“demonstrate responsibility for your own objectives”
3
“act in a fair, inclusive and respectful way when dealing with others”
4
“be considerate and understanding of other people’s points of view”
5
“understand and support the objectives of the wider team”
6
“demonstrate consideration of the wider consequences of own actions”

What each criterion means in practice

1
Show enthusiasm and accountability
Approach the work positively, take ownership of problems and do not hide mistakes or wait for someone else to act.
2
Own your objectives
Know what you are responsible for, track progress and take action when the objective is at risk.
3
Act fairly and inclusively
Apply standards consistently and make it possible for people with different needs or backgrounds to participate.
4
Understand other viewpoints
Listen before deciding how to respond and avoid assuming that resistance or difficulty reflects a poor attitude.
5
Support wider team objectives
Connect your task to what the team is trying to deliver, not just to your own convenience.
6
Consider wider consequences
Think about the effect of your actions on customers, colleagues, workload, trust and future delivery.

How to structure your statement

Use Situation, Task, Action and Result as a private writing structure. Do not add the labels to the final application unless the vacancy specifically asks for them. Keep the opening short and reserve most of the word count for your personal actions.
