1. What does Confident mean in the Civil Service?

You take charge of situations, people and decisions. You communicate with confidence and give direction.

The Confident strength is about providing clarity when people need a view, decision or direction. You speak with assurance, accept appropriate responsibility and remain composed when your position is questioned.

Confidence does not mean being the loudest person in the room. Strong candidates listen, recognise what they do not know and adjust when better information appears. Their confidence helps other people move forward rather than making them feel ignored.

The Civil Service strengths list contains all 36 definitions. Confident often overlaps with Influencer, Team Leader and Authentic while retaining its own focus.

2. What does Confident look like at work?

Clear communication

You state your view or instruction directly and explain the reasoning in language people can follow.

Taking appropriate charge

You step forward when coordination or a decision is needed rather than waiting for somebody else.

Composure under challenge

You can answer questions and defend a sound position without becoming defensive.

Grounded self-belief

You know what you can contribute, while remaining open about limits and willing to listen.

3. Which Civil Service behaviours are linked to Confident?

The official framework maps Confident most closely to Leadership.

The mapping shows the strongest relationship, although any strength can be assessed when it is relevant to the vacancy. Read Civil Service Strengths vs Behaviours before deciding how much example detail and structure your answer needs.

4. Good examples that demonstrate Confident

Look for situations where Confident affected how you approached the work, not just the final result. Useful examples include:

  • You gave clear direction during an urgent or uncertain situation.
  • You presented a recommendation to people with greater seniority or expertise.
  • You challenged an incorrect assumption and explained your reasoning.
  • You chaired a discussion and brought it to a clear conclusion.
  • You admitted what you did not know, then set out how you would obtain an answer.

A short example is usually enough for a strengths answer. The important point is to show that the approach is natural, effective and something you use regularly.

5. Civil Service Confident interview questions

How comfortable are you taking charge when people need direction?

How to answer

Give a direct answer, then explain what helps you judge when to step forward. Show that you create clarity, allocate or agree next steps and remain accountable. A brief example should demonstrate calm leadership without suggesting that you automatically take control of every situation. Mention how you listen to relevant expertise before giving direction.

How do you feel about speaking up to senior colleagues?

How to answer

Explain that status does not prevent you sharing relevant information or a reasoned concern. Describe how you prepare, communicate respectfully and remain open to challenge. The panel should hear confidence in your contribution rather than a desire to confront authority. Add a short example where speaking up improved a decision or prevented confusion.
