A Civil Service disciplinary warning is a formal outcome. A first or final written warning can affect future job security, internal moves and the seriousness of any later conduct issue.

What types of disciplinary warning may be issued?
The available sanctions depend on department policy. Common outcomes include no further action, a first written warning, a final written warning, another permitted sanction or dismissal. Serious misconduct can sometimes lead directly to a final warning or dismissal without earlier warnings.
What should the warning letter explain?
- The finding that has been made.
- The allegation or conduct standard upheld.
- The evidence and reasons relied on.
- The sanction and how long it remains active.
- What behaviour is expected going forward.
- What may happen if there is further misconduct.
- Your appeal right and deadline.
Why a warning matters even if you keep your job
A warning can become the foundation for a more serious sanction later. It may also affect internal opportunities, reputation, probation, security considerations or other employment decisions depending on the policy and circumstances. Read the whole letter rather than focusing only on the fact that you were not dismissed.
Diary the appeal deadline immediately
Do not wait until you have decided whether to appeal. Save the policy, outcome letter and evidence and record the final date for submitting an appeal.
