Experience is one element of Civil Service Success Profiles. It can be assessed through a CV, personal statement, application question, interview or presentation. At interview, the panel may ask for one detailed example or test the breadth of your experience across several roles.

What an experience question is testing
The panel wants evidence that you have carried out relevant work and understand what effective delivery involves. They may test scale, complexity, frequency, professional context, responsibility, stakeholder exposure and results. A list of duties is rarely enough because it does not show how well you performed them.
Read the criterion closely. Experience of leading a team, improving a service and working with senior stakeholders are separate requirements even when one project involved all three. Your answer should make the named experience visible from the opening sentence.
How experience differs from a behaviour answer
Prepare evidence around the criterion
Create an experience inventory before choosing an answer. For each criterion, record the roles, projects or responsibilities that prove it. Note the size of the work, your authority, the tools or processes used, the stakeholders involved and the result. Choose evidence that you can explain in detail without exaggeration.
A broad question may need a short summary of your wider experience followed by one strong example. A narrow question usually benefits from a direct example. Keep the answer focused on the criterion rather than trying to tell your whole career story.
