Technical assessment varies widely between professions. A digital role may use a technical question or exercise, a policy role may test analytical methods, and an operational profession may assess a specialist framework, qualification or practical standard. The vacancy should name the technical requirements.

Find the technical standard in the advert
Mark every reference to a profession, framework, methodology, tool, qualification, accreditation or specialist skill. Check whether the vacancy links to a capability framework or gives different expectations by grade. The technical interview should be prepared against that wording rather than a general list of industry topics.
Look for verbs as well as nouns. An advert that asks you to design, assure, diagnose, advise or lead expects more than awareness. Prepare examples showing the action, the technical judgement and the result.
What a strong technical answer contains
Prepare for several question styles
- Knowledge questions that ask you to explain a concept, method or standard.
- Applied questions that ask how you used technical knowledge in a real situation.
- Diagnostic questions that give you a problem and ask how you would investigate it.
- Trade-off questions that test how you balance quality, cost, time, risk or user need.
- Assurance questions that test how you check technical work and respond to defects.
- Learning questions that ask how you keep specialist knowledge current.
