Complete HEO, SEO and Grade 7 Civil Service commercial personal statement examples
A strong commercial personal statement makes the decision trail visible. It shows what the organisation needed, what evidence you used, what commercial choice you made and how the result protected value, service or risk.
The examples below cover procurement, contract management and supplier work at HEO, SEO and Grade 7. The live vacancy remains the final authority on word count, technical criteria and grade expectations.

What commercial recruiters usually want to see
Commercial vacancies often test experience in the procurement process, contract or supplier management, commercial focus, risk, ethics and stakeholder relationships. The strongest statement follows the advert order and gives enough detail for the sifter to see the level of responsibility.
At HEO, show independent delivery of defined commercial work. At SEO, show wider ownership and stronger negotiation or advisory responsibility. At Grade 7, show leadership, strategic trade-offs and accountability for important commercial outcomes.
How to structure the statement
Use the essential criteria as the structure. A connected example can support several criteria, though each requirement should still be easy to find. Explain the commercial problem and the constraint, then spend most of the space on your analysis, judgement, stakeholder handling and result.
Keep legal or process detail proportionate. The reader needs to know that you operated within the correct framework. They also need to see the decision you personally made or recommended.
Common personal statement mistakes
- Opening with a long career summary and leaving too little room for evidence.
- Listing procurement stages while leaving commercial judgement unclear.
- Using “value for money” as a claim with no explanation of the value assessment.
- Describing negotiation with weak evidence of preparation, leverage or outcome.
- Claiming contract ownership when the applicant only attended supplier meetings.
- Using senior examples where the applicant claims approvals or strategic decisions beyond their credible authority.
- Repeating the same supplier example against every criterion.
