Civil Service Security Clearance Delays and Provisional Job Offers
Hello,
I accepted a provisional Civil Service job offer several months ago and most of my pre-employment checks have been completed. The remaining part is security clearance.
The application portal has not changed for weeks and the recruitment team can only tell me that the check is in progress. I have not resigned from my current job, but the uncertainty is making it difficult to plan and I am worried that the vacancy will disappear or the offer will be withdrawn because the process is taking too long.
Does a long delay mean that something is wrong with the clearance? Can I contact anyone directly, and should I ask the department for another role or temporary start while I wait?
I do not want to keep chasing if there is nothing I can do, but I also do not want the application to be forgotten.

A long security-clearance delay does not by itself mean that clearance will be refused, but a provisional offer normally remains conditional until the required checks are completed. Keep the sponsoring recruitment team informed and avoid resigning until you have a formal offer and agreed start date.
