EO Developing Self and Others Behaviour Statements

Developing Self and Others at EO level needs clear evidence, not a list of qualities. This guide explains the criteria, shows how to build a focused statement and gives you complete examples to study before writing your own.

What is Developing Self and Others?

Developing Self and Others is about identifying capability gaps, learning deliberately and helping colleagues build confidence and skill. At EO level, strong evidence shows a practical development need, a plan, feedback and a real change in capability or delivery.

What are the criteria at EO level?

The EO scoring guide has the following criteria. Your statement does not need to repeat this wording. It needs to make each point visible through the actions you took.

  • identify gaps in own and team’s skills and knowledge
  • set and consistently meet development objectives
  • seek learning opportunities
  • support the development plans of all colleagues, recognising how diversity of experience/background can help to build an inclusive team culture
  • consider the contributions of all team members and delegate work to aid the learning and development of all
  • encourage and listen to developmental feedback from colleagues

How to structure your statement

Keep the background short so the assessor has enough room to see your judgement and actions. A 250-word statement normally needs most of its words in the action section.

PartWhat to show
SituationThe service, task or challenge and why it mattered.
TaskYour own responsibility, authority and the required outcome.
ActionThe decisions, checks, communication and practical steps linked to the criteria.
ResultA clear outcome, measure, learning or sustained improvement.
