Prepare for HEO Delivering at Pace questions with criteria-led evidence
HEO Delivering at Pace answers should explain your thinking, personal actions and result in enough depth for challenge. The question may use different wording, but the panel will still look for evidence aligned to the HEO and SEO criteria.

Delivering at Pace interview questions can ask about a specific event, a difficult judgement, a change you led or the way you normally approach a problem. Listen to the exact wording and select the example that answers it most directly.

The strongest answers at HEO level show ownership of a defined outcome and make the reasoning visible. Pace is controlled delivery, not simply working quickly. Weak answers rely on personal effort, long hours or constant checking of others.

HEO Delivering at Pace criteria

The current HEO and SEO Delivering at Pace guide expects evidence that you can:

  • “show a positive approach to keeping the whole team’s efforts focused on the top priorities”
  • “promote a culture of following the appropriate procedures to ensure results are achieved on time whilst still enabling innovation”
  • “ensure the most appropriate resources are available for colleagues to use to do their job effectively”
  • “regularly monitor your own and team’s work against milestones ensuring individual needs are considered when setting tasks”
  • “act promptly to reassess workloads and priorities when there are conflicting demands to maintain performance”
  • “allow individuals the space and authority to meet objectives, providing additional support where necessary, whilst keeping overall responsibility”

What the panel is testing

Choose a fixed or urgent outcome with competing demands. Show milestones, prioritisation, resources, delegated authority, monitoring and prompt action when a dependency changed.

The result should show that the important work met time and quality requirements without ignoring procedures or individual needs.

  • A clear HEO-level responsibility rather than passive participation.
  • Personal actions and decisions supported by evidence or guidance.
  • Appropriate involvement of colleagues, stakeholders, specialists or users.
  • Control of risk, quality, inclusion, resources or competing priorities where relevant.
  • A credible result and enough underlying detail for follow-up questions.
