Prepare for HEO Developing Self and Others questions with criteria-led evidence
HEO Developing Self and Others answers should explain your thinking, personal actions and result in enough depth for challenge. The question may use different wording, but the panel will still look for evidence aligned to the HEO and SEO criteria.

Developing Self and Others interview questions can ask about a specific event, a difficult judgement, a change you led or the way you normally approach a problem. Listen to the exact wording and select the example that answers it most directly.

The strongest answers at HEO level show ownership of a defined outcome and make the reasoning visible. Connect development to a delivery need. Weak answers mention completing a course or showing someone a task without objectives, adapted support, feedback or evidence of independent improvement.

HEO Developing Self and Others criteria

The current HEO and SEO Developing Self and Others guide expects evidence that you can:

  • “identify capability gaps for yourself and your team”
  • “ensure development objectives are set and achieved to address any gaps and enable delivery of current and future work”
  • “take time to coach, mentor and develop other colleagues to support succession planning”
  • “promote inclusiveness by respecting different personal needs in the team and use these to develop others”
  • “reflect on your own work, continuously seek and act on feedback to improve own and team’s performance”

What the panel is testing

Choose a capability gap that mattered to current or future work. Show how you assessed needs, agreed objectives, coached or mentored, sought feedback and reviewed progress.

The result should demonstrate independent capability, succession, improved quality or a lasting learning resource.

  • A clear HEO-level responsibility rather than passive participation.
  • Personal actions and decisions supported by evidence or guidance.
  • Appropriate involvement of colleagues, stakeholders, specialists or users.
  • Control of risk, quality, inclusion, resources or competing priorities where relevant.
  • A credible result and enough underlying detail for follow-up questions.
