How to use Employment History and Previous Skills and Experience for EO and HEO HMRC Compliance applications
The Civil Service CV section often contains two different boxes. Employment History gives the factual timeline. Previous Skills and Experience is where you make the strongest case for why your background fits the compliance role.
The exact format and sift method can change by campaign. Read the full advert and any attached candidate information before deciding what to include.

How to use Employment History
Keep Employment History factual unless the application specifically asks for responsibilities. Include employer, job title and dates. Add short role detail only when the vacancy asks for it or when the system clearly provides space for that purpose.
The detailed evidence belongs in Previous Skills and Experience where the form includes that section. This keeps the timeline easy to scan and gives you room to map your strongest evidence to the advert.
How to use Previous Skills and Experience
Create one evidence slot for each important advert point. Compliance roles often reward evidence handling, customer communication, decision making and accurate records. HEO applications may also need complex case ownership, coaching or wider assurance responsibility.
Use the wording of the advert as a heading where the form allows. Under each heading, provide specific evidence from your own background and a practical result.
Scoring and format warning
Civil Service CV instructions vary between campaigns and there is no universal scoring format for every HMRC vacancy. Follow any specific word limit, requested structure or sift guidance in the live advert first. The method on this page is a practical way to make evidence easy for the sifter to find.
Short free example
Criterion: Able to analyse information and make sound decisions.
Weak: I regularly reviewed information and made decisions in line with company policy.
Stronger: Reviewed customer applications against supporting financial records, identified discrepancies and contacted customers for clarification before making approval decisions. Recorded the evidence considered and the reason for each decision so later reviewers could follow the case.
Common CV mistakes
- Using Employment History for long duty lists and leaving little useful evidence for the sift.
- Listing software or systems with no explanation of how they supported case decisions.
- Calling routine checking an investigation without showing the issue or judgement involved.
- Using the same example under several criteria with only minor wording changes.
- Leaving out outcomes such as prevented loss, improved accuracy or reduced returned cases.
- Using HEO wording that claims leadership without showing the decision or assurance responsibility.
