HR Adviser and HR Business Partner CV and Previous Skills Examples

Employment History and Relevant Skills and Experience examples for Civil Service HR applications

Civil Service application forms often separate Employment History from Previous Skills and Experience. Employment History is normally a factual timeline. Previous Skills and Experience is where you map concise evidence against the vacancy requirements.

Read the vacancy instructions first

HR recruitment campaigns use CV boxes differently. Some ask for job titles and dates only. Others request duties, achievements, technical experience or evidence against named criteria. Follow the instructions in the vacancy before applying the examples on this page.

If the form provides a separate Previous Skills and Experience box, keep the Employment History factual unless the vacancy asks for more detail.

Employment History

A simple format is usually enough:

~ Department for Public Services | HR Adviser | April 2024 to present

~ Regional Services Agency | People Services Officer | January 2022 to March 2024

~ Northborough Council | Customer Service Team Leader | June 2019 to December 2021

Relevant Skills and Experience

Use one concise evidence slot for every important advert point. This can include essential criteria, relevant desirable criteria, responsibilities, professional requirements and specific experience requested in the person specification.

Use the advert wording as the label where it helps the sifter. Follow it with a short evidence summary showing where you used the skill and what you personally contributed.

Keep full STAR detail for the personal statement and behaviour sections. Previous Skills and Experience should function as a clear evidence map.

Short HEO example

~ Policy advice and case management: Managed attendance and performance cases across an operational directorate, reviewed policy and evidence, coached managers on available options and kept actions, deadlines and specialist referrals clearly recorded.

This gives the sifter enough information to understand the relevance without turning the CV section into a full case narrative.

Common mistakes

  • Writing a general career profile instead of matching the advert point by point.
  • Turning each criterion into a full STAR answer.
  • Repeating detailed personal statement examples almost word for word.
  • Claiming broad employment law expertise when the evidence only shows use of internal policy.
  • Giving several casework entries while leaving a business partnering criterion unsupported.
  • Using vague labels such as stakeholder management without naming the actual HR setting or contribution.
