A strong project delivery personal statement links your experience to the vacancy criteria and makes your delivery judgement visible. Recruiters need to understand what you owned, how you controlled the work and what changed because of your decisions.

What project delivery recruiters usually want to see

The advert controls the content. Common criteria include planning, risk, governance, stakeholders, delivery controls, budgets, benefits, leadership and use of data. Some roles also require commercial experience, business change, digital delivery or professional qualifications.

Use evidence rather than a list of responsibilities. Explain the project, your authority, the problem, the decision and the effect on delivery. Keep ownership accurate. Project Managers can prepare recommendations and manage delivery while the sponsor or Senior Responsible Owner retains formal accountability for major investment decisions.

How to structure the statement

A useful structure is:

1. A short opening that establishes the relevant level and type of project delivery experience.
2. A substantial example covering the lead criterion and the most important technical requirements.
3. Further evidence covering stakeholder management, governance, risk, cost, change or benefits where the first example does not cover them fully.
4. A short closing sentence only where it adds something specific. Avoid a generic claim that you are suitable.

One broad project can work when it genuinely contains the required evidence. Several shorter examples can be safer when the advert asks for unrelated criteria. The reader should be able to identify every important requirement without searching through a career history.

How the evidence changes by grade

• EO: accurate project information, defined controls, routine coordination, sensible escalation and reliable follow-through.
• HEO: ownership of a low complexity project or substantial workstream, with planning, risks, stakeholders and governance handled independently.
• SEO: leadership of a wider project, coordination through others, complex dependencies and credible advice to senior decision-makers.
• Grade 7: high complexity delivery, strategic trade-offs, significant resources, senior accountability and a clear link to organisational outcomes.

Common personal statement mistakes

• Opening with a long career summary that uses valuable words without answering the criteria.
• Naming PRINCE2, Agile or another method without showing how the approach helped the project.
• Describing the project team’s work while personal decisions remain unclear.
• Treating a completed plan or report as the result.
• Giving a perfect result that has no credible baseline or explanation.
• Using a senior title to compensate for evidence that remains administrative or routine.
