Temporary Flexible Working Arrangements

A temporary flexible working arrangement can address a short-term need, test a proposed pattern or support a transition without immediately changing the contract permanently. The arrangement still needs clear terms, dates and review arrangements.

When a temporary arrangement may fit

  • Short-term caring responsibilities or disruption.
  • Medical treatment, recovery or a temporary health restriction.
  • A phased return from family leave or sickness.
  • A trial before a permanent statutory decision.
  • Travel or domestic disruption with a known end point.
  • A temporary project, training or study commitment.

Temporary does not mean informal or unclear

The arrangement should state the working pattern, start date, end date, contractual status, review point and what happens afterward. Without this, a manager and employee may hold different expectations about extension or return to the previous pattern.

Choose the correct route

A short arrangement can be agreed informally, under a temporary policy, as a reasonable adjustment or as a time-limited variation. A statutory flexible working request may be unnecessary if no permanent contractual change is wanted, but using an informal route should not remove any separate adjustment rights.

Agree the end before the start

The safest temporary arrangement records the default position at the end and the process for requesting an extension. Do not wait until the final day to discover that the manager expects an immediate return.
