Prepare a natural answer that shows how this strength appears in your work.
On this page
The Civil Service Authentic strength describes a natural way of working that may be assessed in an interview, recorded video interview or another strengths-based exercise. This page explains what Authentic means, how it appears at work and how to answer questions that explore it.

1. What does Authentic mean in the Civil Service?
You are self-aware and true to yourself in all situations, even when under pressure.
Being Authentic means being self-aware and consistent with your values even when pressure makes it easier to perform a role or hide uncertainty. You communicate honestly, acknowledge limits and make decisions you can explain without changing personality for different audiences.
It does not mean sharing every thought, refusing to adapt your communication or using bluntness as a substitute for honesty.
The Civil Service strengths list contains all 36 definitions. 2. What does Authentic look like at work?
Self-awareness
You understand your values, preferences, strengths and limits.
Consistent conduct
Your words and actions remain aligned across audiences and under pressure.
Honest communication
You can acknowledge uncertainty, error or disagreement without becoming evasive.
Grounded confidence
You speak in your own voice and remain open to challenge or learning.
3. Which Civil Service behaviours are linked to Authentic?
The official framework maps Authentic most closely to Communicating and Influencing.
The mapping shows the strongest relationship, although any strength can be assessed when it is relevant to the vacancy. Read Civil Service Strengths vs Behaviours before deciding how much example detail and structure your answer needs.
4. Good examples that demonstrate Authentic
Look for situations where Authentic affected how you approached the work. Useful examples include:
- Admitting that you did not know an answer and finding it promptly.
- Explaining a decision that was unpopular but aligned with agreed values.
- Giving an honest view when senior colleagues expected easy agreement.
- Taking ownership of a mistake without overperforming remorse.
- Adapting your style while keeping the message and values consistent.
A short example is normally enough for a strengths answer. The panel needs to hear that the approach is natural, effective and something you use regularly.
5. Civil Service Authentic interview questions
What do you enjoy about communicating and acting in a way that feels honest and consistent?
How to answer
Give a direct answer and explain which part of communicating and acting in a way that feels honest and consistent gives you energy. Add a brief example that shows you perform it well and use it regularly. Keep the focus on your natural working style rather than delivering a long behaviour story.
How do you respond when people expect you to agree with a view you do not support?
How to answer
Describe your genuine first reaction, the useful action that follows and how you protect performance. Your answer should show that the Authentic strength remains available under pressure, while still sounding realistic and self-aware.
