Moving to Another Role Within the Civil Service

Moving to another role within the same department is usually an internal appointment or managed move rather than a resignation. The key issues are release date, pay, grade, continuity, probation, vetting and the transfer of work and records.

Confirm the type of move

An internal promotion, level transfer, temporary promotion, loan, managed move and expression-of-interest appointment can have different terms.

Ask for the appointment type and effective date in writing.

Release from the current role

Your manager may need time to arrange cover and handover. The release date should be agreed through the departmental process.

Do not send a resignation unless HR has confirmed that this unusual step is required.

Check the new terms

  • Permanent or temporary status.
  • Grade and salary.
  • Location and attendance expectations.
  • Probation or trial period.
  • Allowances.
  • Vetting.
  • Start date and line manager.
  • Effect on existing flexible working or adjustments.

Civil Service departments use different contracts, policies and approval routes. Check your own contract, intranet guidance, scheme documents and any letter you have received before acting.

Members can unlock the internal-move checklist, release-date negotiation, terms comparison and wording for protecting adjustments, leave and temporary-promotion rights.
