There are several ways to leave a Civil Service role. Resignation is only one route. A transfer, internal move, retirement, career break, voluntary exit or redundancy can have very different effects on continuity of service, pension rights, pay and future eligibility.

Choose the correct route
Start by identifying whether you are leaving the Civil Service entirely or moving within it. This distinction affects the forms used, payroll handling, pension continuity and the language you should use with your manager.
A cross-government transfer should normally be handled as a transfer rather than a resignation. An internal move may require a release date instead of notice in the usual sense. Retirement and exit schemes involve separate paperwork and financial decisions.
The main ways to leave
Resignation
You give notice and your employment ends on an agreed date.
Transfer or internal move
Your employment continues, with service and records moving through the relevant process.
Retirement
You leave employment and claim some or all pension benefits under the applicable scheme rules.
Exit or redundancy
You leave under formal scheme terms that may include compensation and specific restrictions.
What to check before acting
Before you send any resignation or accept an exit date, check your contractual notice, annual leave balance, pension position, outstanding expenses, loans or training agreements, security obligations and any active HR process.
Where a new Civil Service role is involved, confirm whether the move is being processed as a transfer. Do not assume that resigning first will be harmless.
