Changing Your Mind After Resigning

A resignation usually takes effect once valid notice has been given. You can ask to withdraw it, but the employer does not normally have to agree. Act quickly and obtain the decision in writing.

Ask immediately

Explain that you want to withdraw the resignation and identify the notice date and proposed final day.

Delay makes agreement harder because recruitment, workforce and payroll actions may already have started.

The department will consider practical effects

The decision may take account of whether the resignation was clear, whether it was given in the heat of the moment, what actions have already been taken and whether your role remains available.

Departmental policy and the circumstances matter.

Do not assume silence means acceptance

Continue to follow the existing notice arrangements until written confirmation says the resignation has been withdrawn.

Ask what happens to any recruitment, handover or payroll action.

Civil Service departments use different contracts, policies and approval routes. Check your own contract, intranet guidance, scheme documents and any letter you have received before acting.

Members can unlock the withdrawal request wording, heat-of-the-moment evidence checklist, escalation options and a plan for handling the period while the department decides.
