Civil Service Career Breaks and Unpaid Leave

A career break or period of unpaid leave can let you step away without resigning, but approval and terms depend on departmental policy. The arrangement should be confirmed in writing before you make commitments.

Career break and unpaid leave are policy-based

There is no single entitlement to a Civil Service career break in every situation. Departments set eligibility, maximum length, notice, approval and return arrangements.

Read the current policy and identify whether your request is a career break, special unpaid leave or another form of absence.

What approval usually considers

  • Operational impact and workforce planning.
  • Length and proposed dates.
  • Reason for the break.
  • Conduct and performance position where relevant.
  • Conflicts of interest and outside work.
  • Vetting, security and return arrangements.

Get the return terms in writing

A career break may preserve a relationship with the department without guaranteeing the same job, team or location on return.

Ask what role, grade, location and process will apply at the end.

Civil Service departments use different contracts, policies and approval routes. Check your own contract, intranet guidance, scheme documents and any letter you have received before acting.

Members can unlock the career-break application method, business-case wording, return-risk checklist, outside-work questions and a response plan if the request is refused.
