How to Apply for a Civil Service Job

Applying for a Civil Service job becomes much easier when every part of your application is planned around the specific vacancy. This guide gives you the route from advert to submission, then points you to grade-specific help where the level of evidence matters.

Start with the vacancy, not a reusable application

A Civil Service vacancy is an assessment brief. Read the job description, person specification, candidate pack and form before selecting examples. List every essential criterion, behaviour, experience requirement, technical requirement and word limit. The advert tells you what will be assessed and when.

Choose the right route for the grade

The grade sets the scale of evidence. It does not replace the vacancy requirements. A strong example makes your own decisions, actions and results visible at the level requested.

Entry grades
Administrative Assistant guidance and Administrative Officer guidance help you calibrate evidence for your starting point.
Management grades
EO, HEO and SEO guidance focus on increasing ownership, judgement and impact.
Senior management
Grade 7 guidance and Grade 6 guidance cover strategic leadership, assurance and complex delivery.

Understand what the form is asking for

Plan accessibility support early

If a disability, health condition or access need could affect the application or interview, explain the support you need as early as the application allows. The request should describe the barrier and the adjustment that would help. Read the fuller recruitment-adjustments guide for a practical planning route.
