Scenario
You are reviewing applications for a small support scheme. An applicant asks for two extra weeks to provide one document because they have been in hospital. The scheme allows a reasonable extension where circumstances prevented evidence being supplied and other applicants are not unfairly affected. A colleague says exceptions always lead to complaints and argues that the request should be refused because everyone had the same deadline. The applicant supplied the rest of the form on time, and funding decisions will not be made for another month. You need to apply the discretion consistently and explain your reasoning to both the applicant and your colleague.
