SEO Developing Self and Others Behaviour Statements

SEO application guidance

Build a focused Developing Self and Others statement around the exact criteria, your personal judgement and a result that proves the effect of your actions.

What is Developing Self and Others?

Developing Self and Others is about building the capability needed for current and future delivery.

At SEO level, a strong example should show that you can identify gaps, set meaningful development objectives, coach and mentor others, provide inclusive opportunities and act on feedback. The scale should be a defined service, project, team or workstream where your own judgement is visible, while recognising the authority of senior leaders and specialist colleagues.

The assessor should be able to trace the official criteria through your actions. Mentioning the behaviour or repeating the wording does not prove it.

What are the SEO Developing Self and Others criteria?

Official SEO/SEO Success Profiles criteria

Your evidence should make every criterion visible through something you personally understood, decided, communicated, changed or achieved.

Criterion 1
“identify capability gaps for yourself and your team”
Use performance, future plans or observation to evidence the gap rather than assuming it.
Criterion 2
“ensure development objectives are set and achieved to address any gaps and enable delivery of current and future work”
Show objectives, support, time and how achievement was checked.
Criterion 3
“take time to coach, mentor and develop other colleagues to support succession planning”
Describe the coaching method, feedback and increasing responsibility given to others.
Criterion 4
“promote inclusiveness by respecting different personal needs in the team and use these to develop others”
Explain how different needs and backgrounds shaped the development opportunity.
Criterion 5
“reflect on your own work, continuously seek and act on feedback to improve own and team’s performance”
Give specific feedback you sought, what you changed and the effect on performance.

How to structure a 250-word statement

Use Situation, Task, Action and Result as an editing structure. Do not write the labels into the application unless the vacancy asks for them. Keep the setup short and make the action section carry the Developing Self and Others evidence.

Situation

Set the context quickly. Name the service, project, risk or change and why it mattered.

Task

Make your responsibility and decision authority clear. Avoid hiding behind the team.

Action

Use most of the word count here. Show how you identify gaps, set meaningful development objectives, coach and mentor others, provide inclusive opportunities and act on feedback.

Result

Prove the outcome with credible measures, service impact, reduced risk, learning or sustained change.
