How do I show leadership when I have never managed anyone?
Showing Civil Service Leadership Without Line Management Experience
Hello,
I am applying for a HEO project role that asks for the Leadership behaviour. I have never been a line manager and I do not approve leave, complete appraisals or manage performance.
My strongest example is coordinating a new onboarding process across three teams. I agreed the steps, challenged gaps in the plan, kept people focused and supported two colleagues who were learning the process.
Does that count as leadership, or do I need an example where I formally managed staff?
Quick Answer
Formal line management is not required to demonstrate Leadership. Use an example where you created direction, took responsibility, influenced how other people worked and supported delivery, while being honest about the authority you held.
