Using Older Experience in a Civil Service Personal Statement
Hello,
I am applying for a Grade 7 programme role. My strongest example of leading a complex transformation happened about six years ago.
Since then, I have worked in smaller roles with less scope. My recent examples are relevant, but they do not show the same level of leadership, financial responsibility or cross-organisation influence.
The advert does not set a time limit for examples. I am concerned that using older evidence will make the panel think my skills are out of date or that I have not operated at that level recently.
Should I use the strongest old example or a weaker recent one?
Quick Answer
Use the older example when it gives the clearest evidence at the required grade and the experience remains relevant. Support it with recent evidence showing that the skills, judgement or knowledge are still active.
