Would Applying for a Lower Grade Harm My Future Civil Service Career?
Choosing a Lower Civil Service Grade and Internal Promotion Bias
Hello,
I am currently working outside the Civil Service and I am interested in joining, but I am struggling to decide what grade to apply for.
Based on my previous experience, I think I could probably apply for HEO or maybe SEO roles, but I have seen a lot of people online saying it is much easier to get your foot in the door by applying for an AO or EO position first.
My concern is that if I accept a lower-grade role, people might assume that is the level I am capable of and it could make it harder to progress later. I do not want to spend years trying to climb back up if I could have entered at a higher grade in the first place.
Would accepting a lower grade affect how future applications are viewed, or are promotions based entirely on demonstrating the required behaviours and experience at the time you apply?
I am trying to work out whether it is better to wait for higher-grade vacancies or get into the Civil Service as quickly as possible.

Quick Answer
Starting at a lower Civil Service grade does not automatically limit how far you can progress. Future recruitment panels should assess whether your evidence meets the requirements of the vacancy you are applying for, rather than treating your entry grade as a permanent measure of your ability.
