What Does a Low Civil Service Strengths Score Mean and How Can I Improve It?
Understanding Civil Service Strengths Feedback and Reserve List Scores
Hello,
I recently completed my first Civil Service interview. I did not receive an immediate offer, but I was placed on the reserve list.
My behaviour feedback was encouraging, but my strengths score was much lower than I expected. The written comments were positive, so I do not understand what was missing or how the score was reached.
I prepared examples for the strengths questions in the same way that I prepared my behaviour answers. I am now wondering whether that made my answers too long or rehearsed.
How should I interpret the score, and what should I change before my next interview?
Quick Answer
A low strengths score can happen even when the examples are competent because strengths are not assessed in exactly the same way as behaviours. Panels are looking for evidence that the activity is something you do well, use regularly and find genuinely engaging, usually through a concise and natural response.
Read our Civil Service Strengths Scoring guide to review the three strength elements and the common reasons a good example still scores poorly.
