Translating Private-Sector Experience for a Civil Service Personal Statement
Hello,
I am an operations manager in the private sector and want to apply for HEO Civil Service roles. My experience includes service delivery, complaints, budgets and leading supervisors.
The adverts use language such as public value, ministerial priorities, governance and Success Profiles. My own examples use commercial terms, customers, revenue and service-level agreements.
I do not want to pretend that I have government experience. I also do not want the panel to miss the relevance because the terminology is different.
How should I translate my background without making it sound artificial?
Quick Answer
Describe the transferable responsibility in plain language and keep the facts from your real setting. Connect your decisions to the Civil Service criterion, while avoiding claims that you worked in a government context when you did not.
