How do I move from Civil Service operations into a policy role?
Turning Operational Experience Into Policy Evidence
Hello,
I work in an operational Civil Service role and want to move into policy. Most adverts ask for analysis, drafting, stakeholder engagement and understanding how policy affects delivery.
I have not held a policy job. I interpret guidance, identify recurring service problems and brief managers on changes. My applications currently read like operational delivery examples.
How should I position this experience for a policy vacancy?
Quick Answer
Use operational experience as evidence of policy thinking where you analysed a problem, understood user or delivery impact, developed options and communicated a recommendation. Do not claim policy ownership you did not have. Build a clear bridge from frontline evidence to the decisions the policy team needs to make.
