I confused a strength question with a behaviour question. How do I avoid that?

Telling Civil Service Strength and Behaviour Interview Questions Apart

Hello,

At my last HEO interview, I was asked how I feel when priorities change. I treated it as Delivering at Pace and gave a five-minute STAR answer about recovering a deadline.

The feedback said my strength answers were too rehearsed and did not show enough motivation. I find it difficult to identify the question type quickly when I am nervous.

How can I tell the difference in the interview?

Quick Answer

Listen for what the question is asking the panel to learn. Strength questions usually explore your natural reaction, motivation or preferred way of working, while behaviour questions usually ask for evidence of what you did in a specific situation.
