Civil Service interviews can assess behaviours, strengths, experience, technical requirements or a combination. Read the vacancy and invitation carefully. This hub focuses on behaviour questions for Grade 6 roles.
Strengths are not grade specific, so use the global Civil Service strengths guide rather than looking for separate Grade 6 strength definitions.

Grade 6 behaviour interview guides
What a Grade 6 behaviour answer should contain
- Clear context: the programme, service, policy or professional area and why the issue mattered.
- Personal accountability: the outcome, decision or standard you owned.
- Reasoning: the evidence, options, risks and interests that shaped your action.
- Leadership through others: how you set direction, delegated, influenced or created challenge.
- Wider result: delivery, customer, financial, risk, workforce or organisational impact.
- Learning: what you changed afterwards, where a follow-up question makes this relevant.
Expect follow-up questions
A panel may ask what you personally did, why you chose one option, who disagreed, how you measured the result or what you would change. Prepare enough detail to answer those questions without extending the opening answer into a long background story.
