The Civil Service does not use one universal personal statement format. Some vacancies ask for a single statement against several criteria. Others provide a short essential-criteria list, a person specification or specific questions. Always follow the live instructions first.

What an EO personal statement should do
The statement should make it easy for the sifter to connect your experience to the role. It should identify the requirement, provide specific evidence, show your personal judgement and finish with a useful result. It should not make the sifter infer why an unrelated career story is relevant.

How to break down the advert
Do not stop at the essential criteria heading. Read the role description and responsibilities as well. A responsibility such as maintaining performance information may reveal that the role needs spreadsheet confidence, attention to detail, stakeholder follow-up and the ability to explain trends. Those points should influence your evidence plan even if they are not repeated in the person specification.
| Advert wording | What the sifter may need to see | Possible evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Manage a varied workload and meet deadlines | Prioritisation, realistic planning, monitoring, adjustment and communication when risks arise | Reporting cycle, busy service queue, event coordination, casework or project support |
| Build effective relationships with stakeholders | Purposeful contact, listening, credibility, handling disagreement and maintaining progress | Supplier issue, cross-team process, customer escalation or partner meeting |
| Analyse information and make recommendations | Reliable sources, comparison, judgement, implications and a clear conclusion | Quality data, complaints, finance checks, operational trends or research |
| Confident use of digital tools | Specific systems, how they were used, learning, accuracy, security and benefit | CRM, Excel, SharePoint, casework platform, dashboard or ticketing system |
What to leave out
The second opening immediately proves relevant activity. It gives the sifter a role, scale, actions, stakeholders and output. A short introduction may be appropriate, but it should not consume the space needed for evidence.
