EO personal statements
Turn the advert into a clear evidence plan before you write
A strong EO personal statement is not a general career summary. It is a targeted response to the criteria, responsibilities and person specification in the vacancy, with the strongest evidence placed where the sifter can find it quickly.

The Civil Service does not use one universal personal statement format. Some vacancies ask for a single statement against several criteria. Others provide a short essential-criteria list, a person specification or specific questions. Always follow the live instructions first.

What an EO personal statement should do

The statement should make it easy for the sifter to connect your experience to the role. It should identify the requirement, provide specific evidence, show your personal judgement and finish with a useful result. It should not make the sifter infer why an unrelated career story is relevant.

1
Mirror the advert
Use the vacancy’s wording as headings where the form allows it, or follow the same order within the statement.
2
Allocate one evidence slot per important point
Cover essential criteria, desirable criteria, responsibilities and person specification points, starting with the strongest.
3
Use examples, not unsupported claims
Name the situation, task, information, stakeholders, systems, decisions and outcome that prove the skill.
4
Show EO-level judgement
Explain why you chose an approach, how you balanced needs and when you involved another person.
5
Use the full word count intelligently
Spend more words on the highest-value requirements and less on introductory or linking sentences.

How to break down the advert

Do not stop at the essential criteria heading. Read the role description and responsibilities as well. A responsibility such as maintaining performance information may reveal that the role needs spreadsheet confidence, attention to detail, stakeholder follow-up and the ability to explain trends. Those points should influence your evidence plan even if they are not repeated in the person specification.

What to leave out

Low-value statement space
I am an experienced and highly motivated professional with excellent communication, organisation and leadership skills. I am passionate about public service and believe I would be an asset to the team.
Evidence-led opening
I coordinate a weekly performance cycle covering five operational teams. I verify the source data, challenge unexplained changes, agree actions with team contacts and produce a concise summary for the service manager before the decision meeting.

The second opening immediately proves relevant activity. It gives the sifter a role, scale, actions, stakeholders and output. A short introduction may be appropriate, but it should not consume the space needed for evidence.
