You can normally accept a provisional offer while the required checks are completed without treating it as the point at which you must resign or stop considering every other opportunity. The important distinction is between accepting the provisional offer, receiving a formal offer with confirmed terms, and agreeing a start date.

A move between Civil Service departments should normally be processed through the staff transfer route rather than by ending your employment through an ordinary resignation. Do not submit a resignation simply because one manager is unfamiliar with the transfer process.

Submitting a normal Civil Service application does not usually make secrecy a conduct issue, but the level of privacy depends on the type of move and the vacancy instructions. Loans, temporary opportunities and some expressions of interest may require manager agreement because the current team must release you or keep a role available.

Brief notes are commonly used as prompts in Civil Service interviews, provided the interview instructions do not prohibit them and you still answer the question naturally. The problem is not having notes; it is reading a fixed script that does not adapt to what the panel has actually asked.

You can ask for changes that reduce a disability-related barrier in the assessment, such as written questions, processing time, breaks or clearer practical information. The strongest request explains the specific interview difficulty and the adjustment that would let you demonstrate the same role requirements fairly.

A low strengths score can happen even when the examples are competent because strengths are not assessed in exactly the same way as behaviours. Panels are looking for evidence that the activity is something you do well, use regularly and find genuinely engaging, usually through a concise and natural response.

A failed probation decision can be relevant to future Civil Service employment, particularly where pre-employment checks or an employment record ask about previous service and the reason it ended. It does not automatically mean every later application must fail, but you should not assume that resigning before the decision will erase the underlying record.

You can be genuinely unwell during a notice period and the normal sickness reporting and certification rules still apply. Pay, annual leave and the practical handling of the notice depend on your contract, departmental policy and the length and reason for the absence, so check those points before assuming the whole period will be paid normally.

Scores of 4 and 5 usually indicate that assessors can see relevant evidence, but meeting a basic standard does not guarantee an interview when the campaign is competitive or the sift threshold is raised. The improvement is normally in stronger vacancy matching, clearer personal ownership and better grade-level depth rather than adding more general detail.

A previous grievance should not replace a merit-based assessment of a new application, and you would not normally insert the history into an application unless a question makes it relevant. However, previous employment records, references or checks may become relevant later, so prepare a factual account of how the employment ended.
